    What is our purpose?

  • What is a "chief end"?

A chief end is a central purpose in all that you do. This purpose carries you, whether you are a plumber or housewife, boy or girl, man or woman. It applies both to the rich and poor, the small and the great.

In other words, it does not matter whether you are in a prison or a palace. You can fulfill your purpose as a creature made in God's image, to glorify God and enjoy Him forever.

    Jonathan Edwards wrote:

"God is glorified not only by his glory's being seen, but by its being rejoiced in. When those that see it delight in it, God is more glorified than if only they see it. God made the world that he might communicate, and the creature receive, his glory ... both [with] the mind and the heart."

    The Christian's Mission

The pursuit of our chief end unlocks our everyday mission. If we embrace our chief end, we no longer need to be driven by our own glory; no longer need to be discouraged by our circumstances. Glorifying God fills all our circumstances. If we embrace our chief end, we will know what to do every day of our lives.
